The Lost Art of Resilience

August 31, 2025

We are inclined to shield kids from hardship, but this can often leave them unprepared for the struggles of life. Faith teaches us to grow through trials and develop resilience through adversity. That’s true for kids, teens, and adults.

READ

James 1:2-4; Romans 5:1-5

My brothers and sisters, whenever you face various trials, consider it all joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance complete its work, so that you may be complete and whole, lacking in nothing.

REFLECT

1. When you face a challenge or setback, how do you usually respond: do you avoid it, get frustrated, or lean into it?
2. Who in your life models resilience well, and what can you learn from them?
3. What stories of overcoming hardship can you share that can encourage others, especially others younger than you?

RESPOND

1. Identify one area where you’re avoiding challenge and step into it intentionally, trusting God to guide you. Surround yourself with mentors or friends who can walk with you through adversity rather than shelter you from it.
2. Practice viewing challenges as opportunities for growth and for finding purpose in life.
3. Encourage children, teens, and young adults in your life to face challenges courageously rather than over-managing or rescuing them too quickly.
